112 is also the European emergency number which people in distress can call 24/7 throughout the European Union (similarly to 911 in the USA). However, in Italy this number is not yet active all over the country as a consolidated emergency number. In the future dialing 112 will allow you to reach an operator who will redirect your call to the emergency service required (police, ambulance, fire department, etc.). In the meantime, if you call 112 in a region where it is not active, you will reach the Carabinieri who will help you out.
There is also a free App (for Android, Apple, and Windows) called “Where are U” which is the official App for the 112 number. The App provides automatic location and multilanguage services, among others.
